Observing deeply is fundamental to my artistic process.
I’ve been a maker all my life, but in 2009, a coworker introduced me to the art of cutting paper, and I’ve been at it ever since. I love the process of figuring out the essentials; what’s the least I can show and still evoke my subject?
I’m self-taught beyond that initial introduction. Much of my work is animal portraiture, and I often work from my own photos of animals I’ve worked with as a naturalist. Some of my work is single-layer, and some is composed of multiple layers of the same size with different parts cut away.
Being a papercutting artist has made me a better naturalist. Noticing is essential for both.
